Inclusive and Adaptive Recreation


Washington Township RecPlex encourages all individuals to participate in the recreational opportunities of their choice.


The RecPlex complies with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination of programs, services, and activities for individuals with disabilities. The RecPlex is committed to providing reasonable accommodations, program modifications, and inclusion services to ensure equal access to all services, programs, and activities.

To request an accommodation, please register for the program of your choice, complete this Program Request for Modification Form in full, and submit it along with any important information for the modification request (examples: I.E.P., 504 plan, PBIP, etc.), if applicable to [email protected]. Requests should be received as soon as possible, but no later than 10 business days prior to the start of the program.



Facilities

Aquatics: Both pools at the RecPlex have access to a portable lift. This allows individuals of all abilities to use both the lap pool and the smaller rec pool. The rec pool offers zero-entry access, meaning there are no steps to navigate. The rec pool also has an access chair that allows for persons with a disability to enter the ramped, zero-depth entry and then leave the chair to swim in up to 3.5 feet of water. They can then return to the chair to exit the pool and even use the chair in our showers and locker rooms.

Countryside Park: People of all abilities can explore Countryside Park, thanks to almost two miles of paved paths. 

Town Hall Theatre: All performances at Town Hall Theatre are inclusive. In addition to accessible seating areas, the theatre provides assistive listening units. Please allow two weeks notice for staff to coordinate additional inclusive services, such as audio description, a wheelchair lift, sign-interpreted performances or braille programs. Periodic sensory-friendly performances include reduced lighting and softer sounds.



Programs

While all RecPlex programs and activities are inclusive, we have certain programs that have been specifically adapted for individuals with differing needs. We invite people with disabilities to participate in all our opportunities at the Washington Township RecPlex.

logo for activities that are adaptedAccessAbility: A collaboration between the Washington Township RecPlex, Centerville-Washington Park District, and Washington-Centerville Public Library, AccessAbility rotates locations based on the monthly host. Activities will be adapted to give participants of all ages and abilities an enriching sensory, social, and physical experience.

Sports: Basketball and t-ball leagues are played with lower hoops and nets and color coordinated bases, added as needed, with flags at eye-level to ensure a fun experience for children of all abilities. 

Summer Camps: RecPlex summer camp staff have received Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training to learn how to better manage difficult behaviors using techniques that quickly identify and de-escalate behavior. This training allows our staff to better serve campers and creates an inclusive environment for children of all cognitive and physical abilities.



Special Events

Special events at the RecPlex are a great opportunity to explore our facilities and find out more about the variety of programs we offer.

Adapted Climbing Day: Get ready to climb to new heights! This event is the perfect opportunity for individuals of all abilities to scale our climbing wall.

Family Adventure Day: Held each spring at the RecPlex, this event is a fun chance for participants to use the climbing wall, shoot a bow and arrow, kayak in our pool, play in our indoor preschool playground, and experience all the offerings of the RecPlex!

Woodland Lights: Our annual holiday light show covers 10 acres in Countryside Park behind the RecPlex and is spread out across two miles of paved, wheelchair accessible paths. Additionally, we have a gas-powered four-car train that can seat up to 16 individuals and is an excellent alternative to the walking path. Finally, our staff is able to provide rides on the golf cart through the light show. Please note that only one golf cart is available and should be requested in advance by calling 937-433-0130.
